THE EXIT INTERVIEW THAT FINALLY TOLD THE TRUTH

The exit interview asked the standard questions.

Why are you leaving? What could we have done differently?

Elena had answered these questions twice before. Two other jobs. Two other exits. Two other times she smiled and said "culture fit" and "new opportunity" and "time for a change."

This time, she told the truth.

"I am leaving because I stopped being a person here."

The HR manager stopped typing.

Elena kept talking. "Seven years ago, I had hobbies. I had friends who were not coworkers. I had a Sunday routine that did not involve checking email.

Now I have a calendar that runs from 7 AM to 8 PM. A phone that vibrates before my alarm. A body that forgot how to sleep through the night.

I did not notice it happening. It was the small yeses. The fifteen-minute meetings at 5:45 PM. The 'quick questions' on Saturday morning. The Slack messages I answered because everyone else was answering."

The HR manager said: "Did anyone ask you to work those hours?"

Elena laughed. No one had asked. No one had to. The culture asked for her. The person who answers fastest cares the most. The person who never says "I am at capacity" gets promoted.

She tried setting boundaries once. Stopped answering after 8 PM. Stopped checking Slack on Sundays.

A teammate told her: "You seem less available lately."

Not "less productive." Less available. As if availability was the job.

She went back to answering. Back to Sundays. Back to the phone before the alarm.

Her father had a health scare. She took three days off. When she returned, no one had asked where she was. No one had covered her work. No one had noticed she was gone.
